I am loving how active I have become and I'm loving the results I'm seeing. This past week was a week full of activity and non scale victories. I didn't have a scale victory this week though. Those pesky 6oz came back again. I had a good talk with my new WW leader and she thinks I'm not eating enough. She wants me to eat either all of my weekly flex points or at least half of my daily activity points. I'm having a hard time doing this as I've never used them before unless it was for a special occasion but I'm going to give it a shot this week to see how it goes.
Let's start with the Activity part of the week.
Monday: 5.81 km Walk 30 minute Beginners Yoga - Yes me and Yoga! Who would have thought that one! 100 squats
Tuesday: 5.22 km Walk with the dog in the morning. 1.77km walk to lunch and back with a friend. Had a great walk, great sushi lunch and fabulous conversation. 105 Squats.
Wednesday 3.75km Walk with the dog, beginners Yoga...yes, tried it again, maybe eventually I'll be able to do the downward facing dog instead of the playful puppy but I'm trying :) 110 Squats
Thursday 3.88km Walk with the dog. No Yoga and rest day from the Squat Challenge, my legs needed the break!
Friday 3.32km Walk with the dog, 130 Squats and a 30 minute kickboxing session on a new dvd I picked up called Punch! (Thank you to the ladies at work who gave me a gift when I left to use towards my weight loss, I used some of that gift to purchase this!)
Saturday - Walking around Vancouver with my husband including a mad dash for the skytrain, and walking back to BC Place. 15,325 Steps for the day. 135 Squats.
Sunday - A variety of activity with no true way to measure it. Volunteering at the Abbotsford Triathlon - set up and tear down of the Transition area including the fencing and bike racks, walking around the area and assisting the public and athletes. Arrived at 630am and left at 1230pm. My feet are crying so yes I'm counting it as activity, according to my pedometer I walked 13, 219 steps. 140 Squats.
Non Scale Victories for the week
Tuesday - walked to the restaurant for Sushi with my friend and slid into the booth, something I couldn't have done 7 months ago. Wahoo! Did I mention WALKING to the restaurant...not something I would have considered doing 6 months ago!
Wednesday - I did Yoga, for the 3rd time. I'm not the most flexible person in the world and I worked hard at it and I stuck to it. I didn't pause it, I didn't modify it, I did it!
Friday - Kickboxing DVD. I worked hard in that work out, doing the steps, doing the hand movements, bobbing and weaving. I didn't pause it, I didn't fast forward it, I stuck with it. I sweated what felt like buckets but it felt so good to accomplish that.
Saturday - This one was HUGE for me. Truly only someone who has had this predicament in the past may understand why it was so huge for me but for some other people it's probably a no big deal thing. I went to a White Caps FC Match with my husband....I sat in the seat...I FIT IN THE SEAT... I wasn't crammed in with my sides spilling over the arm rest. I was COMFORTABLE in the SEAT!!!! I FIT INTO A STADIUM SEAT!!!!! This was truly huge for me. It made me feel so good and so satisfied that I'm making progress.
Sunday - This one honestly made me want to cry. I volunteered at the Abbotsford Triathlon today, the largest size shirt they had was an XL. I haven't been able to wear an XL t-shirt in probably 15-20 years. In all seriousness. I took the t-shirt and when I got to my area with my husband I decided to try the shirt on just to see. Well hot diggity damn IT FIT ME!!!! An XL shirt fit me, on top of the shirt I was already wearing. My husband gave me a high five, a hug and a kiss and told me how proud he was of me. I have to say...that t-shirt fitting me....made my day!

Bouncing Back
I had a very challenging week this week, I took it back to basics, weighing and measuring everything, recording every BLT (Bite, Lick, Taste) and I put in a lot of activity. I went back to doing my intervals and I hoped for the best when it came to weigh in on Friday morning.
I was glad to be at my regular WW meeting. It felt good to see my usual leader and the great assistant's that weigh everyone in. When I got up to the scale my leader mentioned that he missed me last week. I explained that I was off but I went to the meeting at home and I had gained over 3 pounds and it didn't make any sense to me.
The first thing he asked was did I do something different activity wise. I told him that I had my 5km race on Monday and on Thursday we had gone on a 6km hike. He nodded and said that the gain made sense then. My leg muscles were probably holding onto water as I had used them so much and used them doing things I don't normally do. He smiled and said that I would probably have a decent loss this week and he was ready when ever I wanted to stand on the scale.
I was nervous getting on, because I really did want to believe that it had been water weight and that everything would bounce back into place. Well bounce back it did, with a resounding 7.8 pound loss! Not only did I make up for the two weeks of gains but I lost a little extra just for good measure! I was so happy to see that number move back down, and my total weight loss go up to 63.8 pounds. I was so relieved!
This morning I took Angus for our usual Saturday morning walk. Some days he isn't in the mood to walk, and other days he is. I did my intervals earlier this week without him and I wasn't planning to do any intervals today. However, Angus had other plans this morning. He was in the mood to trot along and that's just what he did.
Usually when we're walking on the country road he's right beside me or a little bit behind me but today he was out in front most of the way. I don't know what got into him but we ended up doing intervals as I was walking so quickly to keep up with him.
It was great to do the intervals and we did fairly well. Angus had a little bit of an issue with the people picking blueberries along side of us at one of the farms. He seemed to feel the need to bark at all of them as we passed them row upon row. For some reason, he can't seem to walk/run and bark at the same time. Once we got past the farm it was full speed ahead again.
It was a great morning for a walk, and we did our 3.25km walk in 40 odd minutes. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/341822286 I think that was pretty good considering we had to stop for a couple of street lights along the way. I've misplaced my heart rate monitor somewhere in the house. We've searched high and low and can't find it so I've been judging my walks based on my pace. Today our moving pace was 11:54 per minute, our best pace during intervals was a 7:35km pace. Pretty good I think. I wish I had set my Garmin up for intervals before we left, but as I said it wasn't on the agenda today. I may set it for intervals tomorrow morning, just to see if Angus is in a cooperative mood or not.

Abbotsford Police Challenge 5KM
I did it! I did my first official 5KM race today. I was nervous this morning, I had so much energy that after I got dressed, I ended up pacing the house. It was too early to leave for the race, but I just couldn't sit down!
When I signed up for the race back in January, I just wanted to finish before they closed the route. Then I wanted to finish in an hour and fifteen minutes. Last week I decided I wanted to finish in an hour and 5minutes. For now, let's just say, I shouldn't have been worrying about my time.
I drove to the Run Site, parked and pinned my bib on. I went looking for my sister who is the race organizer. I wanted to see if there was anything I could do to help her out. She had everything under control with a fabulous number of volunteers ready to go. I chatted with a couple of people I know, my brother in law and his best friend. Before I knew it, it was time to head over to the stage area for warm up. A few minutes later, the national anthem sung and speeches by the dignitaries, it was time to head out. The 10km runners went first, then the 5km runners and finally us walkers.
I started out in the middle of the pack and quickly found myself toward the back of the pack. I guess there were just a lot of fast walkers doing this race. I was determined not to let that bother me and I decided to try to keep up with two ladies who were walking at a good pace just a head of me. I did manage to stay with them for the first 10 minutes or so but then I wanted to do my intervals so I started jogging for 40 seconds and walking for 1minute and 10 seconds.
The whole rest of the race, I would pass a woman pushing a wheel chair and then she would pass me, we seemed to be running intervals at different times, I was resting when she was running and she was resting when I was running. Her name was Darlene and her companion was Bob, an older gentleman who was just excited to be there, honking his horn and calling out hooray to people who passed him.
I was really conscious of my pace and kept checking my Garmin to make sure that I was on target, I figured I needed to walk about a 12min km, which is pretty normal for me. I was surprised to see that I was actually in the 11-11:30 min pace. I think I have to attribute that to the play list I downloaded last night, and the fact that I didn't want to be the last person to cross the finish line!
I was thankful for the water station at 2.5km's as my throat was really dry, probably because I've just started learning to run that I breathe in and out through my mouth. I made sure to thank all of the volunteers as I came across them, the Road Marshall's, the water station attendants and the people cheering the runners and walkers along.
I kept my intervals up through Km 2-4 and then planned to walk the last km. It turns out with Bob and Darlene pacing me, I decided I had to do a couple of more intervals and I ended up running down the lane to the finish line. I got such a sense of pride and accomplishment as I did that as I knew there were a few people still behind me.
I was completely shocked when I stopped to get my finisher's medal and stop my Garmin when I saw the time on it.
Oh yeah, I beat my goal by ten minutes. I stopped my Garmin at 54:47:59. Woohoo! I was so excited that the first thing I did was call my husband who is away this weekend. I had to fight tears back as I told him I was done and I had done it in 54:47. I am SO proud of that time!
Once I was done talking to him I saw a friend of mine from the Run for the Cure Committee, and she took my post run picture for me.
I made my way over to the food area where they had so much food, they had bunches and bunches of banana's, Costco Muffins, Pizza and Ice Cream. Keeping my points in check was important so I just took a banana and a bottle of water. I have to say, the water really hit the spot!
When I got home, I was interested to see where I ended up overall for the race and I went to the Race headquarters page to look up my details.
So 21 out of 23 isn't bad, or so I thought until I looked at the page that shows my age group and the other 2 ladies didn't actually do the race. I'm still happy with how I did and I'm proud of the fact that a year ago I wouldn't have done this at all. I would have been too self conscious and too embarrassed to register for a race. So yes I may be slow, but hey! Slow and Steady finished the race!
I'm really proud of what I accomplished today!
